Over the period of being an undergraduate, I have encompassed my time as a student with many scientific coursework and laboratory experiences to improve my ability as a growing researcher. I have taken STEM coursework and have experience working in organic and inorganic chemistry, biology, and physics laboratories as an accompaniment. However, I wish to highlight key courses and their general conceptual objectives that I believe have helped me strengthen my scientific knowledge the most. Through my molecular biology course and a succeeding lab course, I received an upper division understanding of transcription and translation, the key processes involved in any molecular topic. Not only have I understood the specific ingredients and products of these vital biological procedures, but also the ways prior through completion in which these processes can be controlled. Additionally, this course has introduced me to the general basis for genetic editing (via CRISPR) and cancer or oncogenic genes and has provided me the inspiration for much of my interest in molecular based research. Furthermore, through my eukaryotic gene regulation course, I further developed my understanding of molecular biology. I have gained a plethora of various modes of altering the living genome through specific modifications. In addition, I was introduced to the analysis of numerous modern methods of genetic detection assays (GROseq, ChIPseq, DNase I, HiC, etc.). These are the most useful techniques and concepts that I believe have improved my capabilities as a scientist as a whole and will benefit me in any research I may partake in for the upcoming future.
Outside of my academic career, I spend my free time engaging in activities to benefit myself and those around me. As a strong believer in climate activism, I have helped organize a student led group on Foothill Campus known as ScholarsforClimate to help spread awareness in the dangers of climate change and even gained signatures for petitions to be used for convincing our district congress members to sign for the recently published policy “Green New Deal” addressing climate change through job creation and reducing economic inequality. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 outbreak we were unable to host our peaceful protest walk on campus and therefore transformed our efforts into an informative flyer which we sent to our faculty and students of the campus via e-mails and social media to optimally spread awareness.
Additionally, to help incoming and experienced students connect on campus in my time as president of the Honors Connection Club at Foothill College, we hosted an event known as OwlTalks. In our modification of the widely known TED Talks, students were able to present in 15 minute intervals regarding a selected theme such
as climate change or
mental health awareness.
This productively allowed
students to interact with each other intellectually on a topic that they are passionate about as much as the speakers themselves.
